He was the first of three boys, followed by Gary and Jim. The family was very involved in farming which included many 4H events. As a teenager Dennis began working for neighbor, Ed Thomas, and helped run their farm. Dennis went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan getting his degree in Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science, even playing on the university curling team. He still kept in touch with his university classmates, never missing a reunion. In 1961 Dennis married Jean Hamilton, buying their first home in Lloydminster as Dennis worked for Canada Packers, Shur-Gain division as a feed salesman. Along with Keith Pawsey a feedlot was started at the edge of Lloydminster in 1963. They soon relocated near Blackfoot and the operation grew reaching its maximum capacity of 8000 head before converting to a forage based operation, running both yearlings and cow-calf pairs. Dennis and Jean have three children, Kelly, Wendy and Brady. Wendy received a medical degree from the U of S and relocated to Ontario. Kelly and Brady each found their way back to the ranch after their education and the family business evolved. Dennis was very community involved through his lifetime. He volunteered with the Lloydminster Exhibition Association, serving a term as president. In 2003 he was awarded the Cattlemen of the Year award, which he accepted with the entire family. He was also involved in Kinsmen, 4H, Alberta Cattle Feeders Assoc., Western Stock Growers Assoc., Canadian Cattlemen’s Assoc. and Holistic Management Canada and International. Dennis's biggest accomplishments were his family. He was a proud grandpa to Tess, Leah, Carter, Julius, Lillian, Ben, Dalen and Nolan. He loved his grandchildren and always took every opportunity to see them, teach them and even learn from them. The family would like to thank Drs. Almond, Chan, Kostic and Naude, along with the nursing staff and all those who have expressed condolences.
