Obituary of Violet and Darryl Mallett

Our beloved mother, Violet Elizabeth Mallett (nee MacLean), passed away peacefully at Dr. Cooke Extended Care in Lloydminster, AB on June 9, 2025 at the age of 101 years.

Violet was born in Lloydminster on September 26,1923 - the sixth of nine children born to Jack "John" and Anna MacLean.

After graduating school, Violet worked for a year, then joined the navy. She was stationed in Truro, NS during World War II. She was a wireless telegraph operator in Communication Branch of Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service.

After the war, Violet returned to Lloydminster in Christmas 1945 and went to Hazel Miller College to brush up her typing skills and went to work for Stemple Accounting Firm.

On September 9, 1946 she married her childhood sweetheart, Norville Mallett. The following years were very busy as mother, wife and homemaker, raising seven children: two girls and five boys.

In 1947, she joined Catholic Women’s League and was a very active member. I believe she had a Life Membership.

From 1970 to 1975, mom was employed with Lloydminster Public School District as Receptionist and Accounts Payable Clerk.

In 1979, mom and dad retired and moved to Summerland, BC. While there she was involved with the C.W.L., visiting the sick and shut-ins. They were also involved with the Legion.

In 1990, mom returned to Lloydminster. She took up lawn bowling, curling and joined the Senior Citizen Society, the Lloydminstrels, singing with them for several years.

She came from a very athletic family. In her school years, she received many certificates for track and field events. In high school, she won the Junior Cup for track and field. She also played softball and loved to dance. Later years she enjoyed daily long walks, reading, visiting shut ins, going to church and most of all, she loved being with her family. She was always such a precious mother, loving, caring, giving and so kind to everyone.

Violet leaves to mourn her passing: her daughters, Teresa Finley of Calgary and Nadine (Dave) Selmer of Edmonton; her sons, Rick (Elaine) of Lloydminster, Greg (Dee) of Pilot Butte and Warren of Sorrento, BC; 14 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; sister, Louise Shand of Saskatoon; sister-in-law, Yolande MacLean of Edmonton; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Violet was predeceased by: the father of her children, Norville; sons, Gerard and Darryl; grandsons, Jeffrey and Evan Mallett; son-in-law, Larry Finley; siblings, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Our beloved brother, Darryl Paul Mallett, passed away peacefully in Lloydminster on December 21, 2020 at the age of 58 years.

Darryl was born in Lloydminster on Christmas day, December 25,1961. He weighed 12 lbs and was the seventh child born to Violet and Norville.

Darryl grew up in Lloydminster where he received his education. In his earlier years he started developing a genetic disease, Alports Syndrome, which affected his kidneys, hearing and led to shakiness. He also developed crippling and painful osteoporosis. Years later his kidneys failed and he had a kidney transplant. Growing up his activities were very limited because of his illness.

He spent a lot of time at Nadine and Dave’s farm. He was like one of their own children. He loved taking his nieces and nephews for rides on the motor bike and skidoo. They also went hunting gophers a lot and went swimming in the pool. They enjoyed all the family barbeques and campfires at the farm, as well as going camping, and loved to fish at the lake.

Darryl moved to Summerland, BC when our parents retired. He loved the outdoors and did a lot of gold-panning and fishing. While there he met Shelly, the mother of his daughter. Caitlyn was such a special daughter and the love of his life. Darryl had a special buddy, a German shepherd dog. He taught her many tricks, like climbing a ladder and sitting in a tree. He called her Bonehead and she was far from that.

Later years he moved back to Lloydminster. He met his partner, Cindy, and they were together for seventeen years, until her passing.

All his life, his mother was very special to him and he was always talking to her and visiting. Later years, he was always looking after her needs and visiting her at Dr. Cooke Extended Care, where she resided since April 2016.

Darryl was a very gentle, kind, loving and caring person and will be forever missed.

Darryl leaves to mourn his passing: his special daughter, Caitlin; grandsons, D.J and Dalton; sisters, Teresa Finley of Calgary and Nadine (Dave) Selmer of Edmonton; brothers, Rick (Elaine) of Lloydminster, Greg (Dee) of Pilot Butte and Warren of Sorrento, BC; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by: his dad, Knobby; brother, Gerard; nephew, Jeffrey Mallett; and brother-in-law, Larry Finley.
