2 Trees or Condolences have been sent in support of Peter’s family — View on Tribute Wall
With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Peter Clayton Chief (Pee-Chun), on July 5, 2025. He was surrounded by the love of his family during his final moments.
Peter was born on August 23, 1945 to the late Eva Chief. Following her passing, he was lovingly raised by Lloyd and Gladys Chief, alongside his grandparents, Antoine and Ellen Chief. Surrounded by their care and teachings, Peter’s early years were rooted in love, faith and cultural strength, laying the foundation for the resilient, generous man he became, devoted to serving his family and community.
He received his education at Onion Lake Anglican Day School, followed by Frenchman Butte School and Paradise Hill High School. A skilled hunter and talented carpenter, Peter was also a proud community leader who served in areas such as justice and recreation.
A direct descendant of Chief Sikaskoc, a signatory to Treaty 6, Peter carried that legacy with great pride. He was a passionate advocate for Treaty rights and always reminded others to never forget who we are as Treaty First Nations people. His voice was one of truth, wisdom and encouragement.
Peter’s humour, quick wit and storytelling abilities were well known. A historian in his own right, he shared the knowledge passed down from his grandfather, stories that stretched back more than a century and were told with reverence and accuracy, often using the Cree names of ancestors.
He led by example, by being present, dependable and deeply committed to his family and community. He volunteered tirelessly, supported local causes and stood for justice, fairness and healing.
Peter was predeceased by his loving wife, Linda; mother, Eva Chief; parents, Lloyd and Gladys Chief; mother, Mary Mountain; brothers, Pat Chief, Glen Chief, Ross Mountain, Roderick Mountain, Wilson Mountain and Austin Mountain; sister, Hilda Mountain; half-siblings, Arnold Chief, Charles Chief, David Chief, Norma Chief, Betty Chief, Lydia Chief and Lorraine Chocan.
He is lovingly remembered by: his children, Pete, Duke (Miranda) and Lynette; brothers, Ralph Chief (Maxine), Glen Mountain (Liz) and Wallace Mountain; sister, Doreen; brother-in-law, Eval Lariviere; daughter-in-law, Tammy Chief; cherished grandchildren, Brendon, Jocelyne, Jacquelyne, Terri, Keanu (Cameron), Shyndal (Jeremy), Quaid (Tessa), Amber, Leigha, Joseph, Dixon, Linelle, Linetta, Destin, Lennox, Kingston and Sophie; half-siblings; Roy Naistus, Susan Chief, Clifford Chief, Viola Chief, Marilyn Chief, Arlene Chief, Eleanor Chief, Eileen Chief, Lyle Chief and Karen Chief.
Peter was a man of faith who often shared words from the Bible and encouraged others to pray and walk with the Creator. His legacy of love, leadership and laughter will live on in all who knew him.
