Sam Hurford Obituary

Lawrence "Samuel" Reid Hurford, December 22, 1934 - February 7, 2026

Lawrence Samuel Reid Hurford, passed away peacefully at Lloydminster Hospital in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at the age of 91 years.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, papa and friend.

Sam is survived by: his two daughters, Teian (Jason) Hurford-Burke and Raeleen (Shaun) Tickowsky; son, Caley (Michelle) Hurford; along with his grandchildren and great grandchild; stepchildren, Leola Stewart and Ron Hurford (Pelletier); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam was predeceased by: his parents, Harry and Annie Hurford; sisters, Lil (Darrel) Hodgson and Win (Rudy) Klutskow; brothers, Duke (Marilyn) Hurford, Tom (Engrid) Hurford, Reg (Sylvia) Hurford and Gord (Mary) Hurford; and daughter, Luana Anhorn.

Sam joined the PPCLI Military at the age of 17. His time of services included postings in Germany, Korea, Australia, Holland, Calgary and lastly to Prince Albert, SK in 1975. This is where he met and married Sandra Hodgson on Feb. 14, 1976. They were married for 22 years and stayed as a family for the last 28 years to continue raising their 3 children and grandchildren together. Sam went on to retire from the PPCLI with 26 years of service at a rank of Sergeant. In May 1977, Sam joined the Correctional Service Canada where he took a position with the Saskatchewan Federal Penitentiary.

After 39 years of service, Sam retired in May 2016 at the ripe age of 82. Following his retirement, Sam moved to Lloydminster where he settled into his new home enjoying all his time with family and friends, spending countless hours tinkering in his garage and yard right up until December 2025.

Sam proudly wore the title of National Regimental Sergeant Major of the Honour Guards and has been decorated with many medals, including the Canadian Forces Decoration, the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal, the Golden Jubilee Medal and the Diamond Jubilee Medal among others. Sam was honoured for being one of the longest serving Civil Servants with 65 years.

He thrived on the camaraderie of his teammates and the Sask Pen, and he very much valued the strong bonds he had developed with serving in the military. It was a brotherhood to him.

Sam‘s most honourable title was Dad and Papa. He led by example instilling in his family, integrity, honesty, compassion, courage, strength and unconditional love. He lived with honour, worked with pride and loved with his full heart. Sam truly lived a fulfilling life and as he would say “Cheers“.

As per Sam’s wishes, there will be no viewing or service.
