Obituary of Marie Haughian

B I O G R A P H Y HAUGHIAN: Marie Evelyn Haughian passed away in the Riverside Health Complex, Turtleford, Saskatchewan on Monday, July 17, 2006 at the age of 74 years. Marie is survived by: four sons: Robert and his wife Terrie and their daughter Hailey; Owen and his wife Janna and their daughters Abby and Grace; Bruce and David; two sisters: Myrtle and her husband Henry Froese and Edna Baker; two brothers: Stanley Maess and his wife Marlis; Leonard Maess and his wife Pearl as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband Vernon on February 4, 2004. The funeral service for Marie was conducted from the Turtleford Baptist Church, Turtleford, Saskatchewan on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Charles Stein. A eulogy was given by Terry & Trudy Maess. Hymns sung were "He Hideth My Soul," "He Leadeth Me," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," accompanied on the piano by Sylvia Bloom. Active pallbearers were Terry Maess, Matthew Maess, Stephen Seabrook, Roger Bloom, Glen Bloom and Michael Bloom. Interment followed in the Turtleford Cemetery. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster and Turtleford administered the funeral arrangements. Eulogy For Marie Haughian Marie Evelyn Haughian was born January 22nd, 1932 to Evelyn and Elmer Maess at Turtleford Sask. She attended school At Turtle Grove. The 2½ miles to the little country schoolhouse was walked twice a day until brother Stanley was old enough to handle the horses. From then on they rode in the horse and buggy. They needed the buggy because the horse was not long enough to hold all the children. At age 7 Marie had a new and very important chapter opened in her life. Ruth Weber began to the gather the Maess children in her horse drawn wagon to take them to her Sunday school class also held at Turtle Grove School. Marie began her relationship and journey with the Lord during that time. The second child of 8, she soon became second mother to her younger siblings. Lillian, Annie, Stanley, Edna, Myrtle, Lenard and Esther. While her mother was ill, at the tender age of 10 Marie took on the total responsibility of hearth and home. Marie may have been small and slight but even in her school years she had a fearless spirit. On more than one occasion Marie was known to take on the schoolyard bullies when they were giving the younger siblings grief. Marie completed her grade 8 at Turtle Grove. Following that she completed her grade 9 and 10 through correspondence. After completing grade 10 Marie worked as a hired girl to a number of ladies in the community. Her skills learned early in life served her well in this capacity. In 1956 Marie entered Certified Nursing Assistant Training in Saskatoon. Following graduation she worked in Rosetown Hospital for 3 years. Her strong work ethic and love for people was very evident. Her patients and coworkers all benefited from her dedication. Many stories were enjoyed by friends and family of Marie’s time on the wards. In 1959 Marie set off for Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills Alberta.1960 saw Marie back in her home town working at her chosen profession And yet again, Marie’s love of children and her dedication became a blessing to the community. While she was working at Riverside Memorial Hospital, she began rooming with Marlis Shick. Marlis soon became Marie’s best and lifelong friend. She also became her sister-in-law when Marlis married brother Stanley. During her time at the hospital a certain legion member became part of the visiting committee to the patient’s in Marie’s care. Marie attended the same church as this gentleman and finally he offered to give her a ride from church to the Nursing Residence. A courtship ensued and Marie became wife to Vernon Haughian in 1963. One year later Robert was born. Another year after that Owen arrived on the scene. In 1967 Marie and Vern’s Centennial Project made its appearance. Bruce, boy number 3 was born. Marie was hoping to gain a female ally in the household and in 1972 a new bundle of joy made its entrance into the Haughian clan. David….boy # 4. It wasn’t until the boys found their wives did Marie gain her female allies. Terrie and Haley joined Robert in 1995 and Janna joined Owen in 2003. Abby and Grace were added to Marie’s camp in 2004 and 2006 Marie loved the Lord. She had a deep, abiding and simple faith. Life was not always easy for Vern, Marie and the boys but hard work and perseverance along with a generous portion of faith and prayer saw them through. Through it all not one word of complaint was heard nor was her gentle spirit ever sullied. Marie loved gardening and loved her flowerbeds. True to her generous nature many many people benefited form her efforts. Marie was willing to share all she had; the fruits of her labour, the wisdom of her life’s lessons, the love of her gentle heart and the faith that was her stronghold. Her home was always open to anyone who was in need. All who entered found acceptance, grace and love. It is impossible to tell the number of lives that were touched in the many, many, many years of service in the AWANA club at the Baptist Church, Island Lake Bible Camp, Pioneer Girls and meals served at the Seniors Lodge. How many other lives were touched as she gave of what she had and prayed daily for missionaries and those in God’s work? Only eternity will allow us to see the reward she has received for her good and faithful service. Sisters Lillian, Annie and Esther predeceased Marie. In February 2004 Vernon, her lifelong partner went home to be with the Lord. Marie’s health began to fail on the footsteps of this occurrence. The years of hard work began to take its toll and Marie’s breathing began to suffer. July 17th at 1:45 AM her struggled ceased and Marie Evelyn Haughian was welcomed home into heaven by her mother, her sisters, her husband and into the arms of her loving Heavenly Father. We will miss Marie horribly. Her passing will leave a void that nothing else will fill. However, Marie is standing straight again. Her voice is clear and strong as she joins the angels in praise to God. The oxygen tubing and machines are gone. Never again will she struggle for her next breath Thank you Lord. MARIE IS FREE!!!!
