A tribute to the life of Marjorie Ellen Thornton
Written by granddaughter Jeri Killam
The Harvard family came to this area in 1914. It was to Henry Harvard and Ellen Lamb that Marjorie Ellen Harvard was born on May 11, 1918. Marj was raised south of Blackfoot. She attended school in Canella and Devonia lake often riding her horse to them.
On April 7, 1937, Marj married Henry Earl Thornton on a hill side at the family farm. This union was blessed with four children, Gerald, Ronald, Mary Jean and Barry.
In the 1950's they sold the farm and moved to town. In 1963, with the help of Reg Hillis, Marj and Earl built the house which was to be the Thornton family home for many years to come.
Marj enjoyed many things in life. She spent many winters curling in Blackfoot, Marwayne and Southminster. She also enjoyed fishing and as you can see by today's display was talented at crocheting.
Marj had the trip of her life going to the Yukon with Earl, Barry and Earl's cousins. During this trip she out fished everyone and brought back a gold nugget which she had mounted and treasured.
In the 1960's Marj took a job at the old Auxiliary hospital in the laundry department and was there for 16 years. She had a great deal of pride in this and still talked about it frequently. When she returned as a resident in 2003 she found comfort in the fact that she new many of the staff and could reminisce with them.
In later life Marj enjoyed the arrival of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many people have commented that these great grandchildren were the light of her life.
Marj's life was also filled with sorrow. Her son Ronald drowned while in the North in 1958. Her son Gerald passed away in 1985. A younger sister Doris passed way in 1994. And she lost her husband of 58 years Earl, in 1995.
Left to cherish Marj's memory her daughter, Mary Jean and Rodney Tymchyshyn, her son Barry and Barb Thornton and daughter-in-law Gwen Thornton. Her grandchildern, Tracy Delorme, Jeri and Bart Killam, Ronald and Stacy Thornton, Kelly and Tammy Thornton, Jody and Shawna Thornton, Nadine and Lindsay Gorda, Deanna and Lloyd Babiuk, and Darren and Shannon Tymchyshyn. Great grandchildren Alex, Taylor and Braedan Delorme, Jenna and Blake Killam, Riley and Tyson Thornton, Nicole and Brayden Gorda and Grayson and Chase Tymchyshyn. Her sister Mary McGregor of Armstrong BC. And her brothers John Harvard of Thailand and Ted Harvard of Blackfoot. Marj also had a very large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins she always remembered.
