Eulogy
Hello, my name is Debbie. I am Nans granddaughter. I am here to honour my grandmothers life. Annie Taylor was born on December 18, 1912, to Peter and Annie Williamson. Since both gramma and her mother shared the same name, she became known as Nan. Gramma was an only child until her chosen sister Jessie arrived. Gramma always said Scotland was the most beautiful place to grow up. She dreamed of going back and visiting someday. I know in my heart gramma stopped there on her way to heaven.
In 1929 at the age of 16, her parents, herself and Aunt Jessie left Scotland. After arriving in Canada, gramma decided it was time to get out in the world and make a living. She did this by housekeeping for the Cooke and Jack families. She also cared for the Pike children. Gramma spoke of these families often, and held in her heart many fond memories of them. It was while working for George Jack that she met my grandfather Jim Hogg. It is said that on their first date that Grampa borrowed a car, and attempted a large hill. Of course the car didnt have enough power. It can be said that their courtship got off to a smashing start. There were married on January 5, 1938 in Vegreville, AB. After nearly 40 years of marriage she was widowed on July 4th, 1976.
Lets back track a wee bit. In 1940 gramma became a mother when Peter was born, and quickly began living the hard life of a single parent while Grampa was away at war. She did this with great confidence though. She even braved a trip by train across country with a toddler to visit Grampa when he was stationed in Nova Scotia.
In 1951 she became a mother again when George was born. After 10 years, I guess it was time for another child.
Her sons fondly recall Gramma canning, making candy and her baking especially her scones and pies. No one ever bakes like your mother, do they! The also recall Gramma and Grampa going to dances on horseback, Gramma walking on fenceposts in the winter to feed the cattle. She was never one to watch other people work. Her boys were her life, to her what could be better than being a mother . . . well unless it was a grandmother.
In 1964 Peter and Lois gave her a granddaughter Leanne, followed by Sandra, myself and Kathy. As soon as, the girls were done. It was time for some grandsons. George and Martha filled this bill with Travis and Terry. You know that saying that if I knew grandchildren were so much fun I would have had them first. That fit our gramma to a tee. Her world revolved around the six of us. We were perfect no matter what we did. Gramma became a great-grandmother (affectionately known as Granny) in 1984 when Sandra had Tanys followed by Ryan. Leanne followed suit with Angela and Curtis. Travis added two more with Jade and Brook. Then in 2003 Tanys made her a great great-grandmother with Zachary.
A few things her grandchildren recall are: Grammas square boys, being called pet, a hood being called a hooood, stealing rhubarb and raspberries on the farm, rover 1-10, being spoiled completely rotten, somehow once she knew you liked something specific to eat it was always there every time you visited, our sweaters made with love, TRYING to teach us to knit and highland dance. Gramma loved to knit first by hand and then with her knitting machine. She would do it hour upon hour. She even made a bit of a career of it when she would make a little something for someone besides her family. But knitting like everything else she did, was done mostly for her family. There was no question that she loved her family and that we loved her. She may no longer be holding our hands, but she will always hold our hearts. Gramma, goodbye until we meet again.
