Christie - Margaret Isobel Christie ( nee Smith ) passed away peacefully in the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre, Lloydminster on Thursday, June 30th, 2011, at the age of 88 years. Margaret will be sadly missed by her five loving children, Larry Christie ( Lori ) of Kelowna, BC., Dennis Christie ( Norma ) of Red Deer, AB., Connie Ponto of Wetaskiwin, AB., Calvin Christie ( Sharon ) of Mission, BC., Duane Christie of Mission, BC., six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, sisters Vera, Doris and Shirley as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Jim Christie, father and mother, Charles and Agnes Smith, sisters Agnes, Elsie and brother John. Margaret was born on January 24th, 1923 in the Vermilion hospital. Her early years were spent growing up on a farm in the Greenstreet /Hillmond area, and after marrying Jim Christie, lived on the Marshall farm and then in Lloydminster. Margaret met Jim Christie at a Landrose dance and they married in Lloydminster on Nov. 8th, 1945 at the Knox Presbyterian Church. They celebrated their 65th wedding Anniversary on November 8th, 2010 in the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Center. Jim passed away 4 days later. Margaret was a stay at home mother, always there for her children. She was a great cook and her many hobbies included music, dancing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, playing cards, playing scramble, attending garage sales and collecting owl ornaments. Margaret's second career after raising her children, included volunteer work. She volunteered at the Jubilee Home, the Interval Women's Shelter and then at the Interval Store. She talked highly about all the friends she volunteered with and most of them have remained friends to the end. She was proud of these organizations. Her scrapbook contained a "Certificate of Appreciation" from the Jubilee Home, dated September 29th, 1987 and also an article from the Meridian Booster of an interview with her about her enjoyment of volunteering at the Interval store. Margaret's sister Shirley wrote the following: According to the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, 'the salt of the earth' is now used to describe a person or persons of great kindness, reliability or honesty; humble and lacking pretension. I can't think of a more apt description of my sister Margaret. The funeral service was conducted from the St. John's Anglican Church, Lloydminster, Sask., on Friday, July 8th at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Michael Stonhouse officiating. The eulogy was given by Larry Christie and a bible reading by granddaughter, Damara Wolter.
