I wanted, and anticipated being able, to be there with my family in person. But as I am unable to attend the service, these few words will have to suffice. And words typically fall short of their aim. They can only hint at the rush of emotion, the groundswell of sorrow, felt by all, myself included, who are impacted by this terrible loss. But in lieu of a hug, in the place of a shared tear of mutual understanding, I will offer these few words, these small and inadequate words. I cannot convince myself that they will provide you enough comfort; I cannot believe that they will offer you any respite from your grief. Nonetheless, I do hope you accept these words of condolence. This gesture is small; the shared sadness, profound. Danny Johnston

I will be forever grateful for the 4 hours I spent with Al while he was in the hospital in Edmonton. When I left him, we were both laughing about the many miles we had travelled together and the wonderful times we shared. The visit was very good for both of us. Although we didn't see each other more than a couple of times a year, we spoke frequently. I will miss him greatly. To Doris, Brad & Derek, our deepest sympathy to you all. Our prayers are with you. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts.

We were shocked to receive Derek's email advising of his Dads passing. I learned of Al's illness last March and in typical Al fashion he chose to understate his case mentioning only that some chemo was in his future. Memories have been triggered - the four of us enjoying life in North Vancouver, Al's visits to the Island - Island golf with Al and Island golf with Derek while Al managed the cart, Sharing stories over dinner here in Parksville. We had tentatively talked about a visit and golf in Mesa but alas that will have to be postponed. Al always, in that quiet manner, exuded his love for Doris and his profound pride in their two boys. A dear and gentle soul has left us and we can only give thanks for the times he shared with us. We will always remember our friendship. Lynn & Brian

Our sympathy and prayers go out to Doris and the Johnson family. I so remember my first visit as a young girl to the Johnson farm in Maymont and to see again our beloved Aunt Merle. I was amazed at the size of the cows. I thought my cousins were so lucky to live there. Many years later, I married an Alberta farmer and was so pleased to have Alan and Doris visit our farm. Memories of the Johnson family will always be close to my heart. It is such a loss when that verbal history is gone with the passing of such a wonderful relative.

Our deep sympathy to Doris, Greg and Families for the loss of Alan. When we were young, Alan as our first cousin, played an important role in our lives. Since his Mother was our favourite Aunt we had some wonderful times together. Such memories we will hold close in our hearts. Thanks Alan for being that special man. God Bless.
