Marlene, we have talked about your & Mel's strong faith and our belief in our futures after passing from this walk. While we mourn his loss amongst us, we also have great joy in knowing where his faith has taken him; joining heavenly choirs & orchestras praising God. Our prayers for you and your family will continue to ask for strength and blessings upon you. Also know that your & Mel's faith is an example for us all. May God bless you abundantly as Mel smiles from above. All our LOVE, Ron & Barb

Marlene - I am deeply saddened by your loss! You and Mel were always so good to me, and along with all the other choir members when I was younger, had such a significant role of love, joy and of course music in my spiritual journey. This is something I am always so thankful for . . . and have great memories of. I know this is just such a deep blow to each of you. I pray your faith guides you through the difficult days ahead as it always has. I extend my love to you from afar. Laurie

The first word that comes to mind as I remember Mel is gentleman. He was a gentle follower of Jesus and believer in the power of prayer. He used his gift of music to draw others to the lord in a non-threatening way. Mel was a mentor to me on my early spiritual journey, which began in Lloyd when I was thirty. He had an inspiring gentle manner and a rock solid faith that made me want to be a better Christian.
I had the good fortune of playing in Marlene and Mel's choir at St Anthony's parish for several years, which enabled me to become a better musician and a better person. They welcomed me and accepted me just as I was which helped me gain confidence in myself and the gifts that God gave me, for which I will be eternally grateful. That foundation helped me immeasurably when I moved to Calgary and became a music minister and leader myself. I remembered their loving welcoming ways and tried to pass on the love that I received playing with them at St. Anthony's.
We liked to play upbeat contemporary Christian music. I'll always remember Mel's solo trumpet intro on Resucito and his cool blues styling on piano. There was a wonderful sense of community in our little choir group and as we grew together in the love of Christ we began to reach outside St Anthony's as the Sanctuary Singers, playing at the jail in Fort Sakatchewan and at the opening of the John Paul II bible school in Radway.
Sometimes after rehearsal the choir would go for an ice cream treat. It was on one of these occasions that Mel introduced me to the Coke float, which I still make and enjoy to this day.
Mel would get his exercise mowing the grass on the very large sloping front lawn at their acreage west of Lloyd with an old power mower that he had to push. We spent many happy hours at Mel and Marlene's place on special occasions, which included roasting a whole pig on a spit one Sunday afternoon.
Thank you God for the gift of Mel in my life. I pray that you will welcome him into your loving arms, a good and faithful servant and a great trumpet player for your band.
