Pearl Sylvia Wood was born at 1:50am August 19, 1937 in Saint Paul, Alberta.
Pearl passed away in her home at Manville, AB at the age of 77 years, unfortunately, without the chance for everyone to say goodbye.
Pearl is survived by her loving husband Joseph Scales; her children, Albert (Sheryl) Hillaby of Lloydminster; Carin (Brent) Fitzpatrick of Shields, SK; Linda (Bryan) of Green Lake, SK; Daughter-In-law Marilyn Ehro of Calgary, AB; her brother Fred (Pat) Wood of Kelowna, BC; Uncle Joe (Anne) Spangler, Maple Ridge, BC; her grandchildren, Olen (Nicole Trebell) and Mason Hillaby, Aleah & Justyn Fitzpatrick, Kymberly (Kyle) Floberg and Kirsten (Taylor) Witter; and two great-grandchildren, Keadyn and Koryl Floberg. Stepson, Rocky (Velvet) Scales; Stepson, Joseph Scales; Stepdaughter, Shelly Barrow; and numerous step-grand children and great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her father Frank Wood in 1980 and her mother May Wood in 1998; her brother Lloyd in 1943; her first husband Ralph Hillaby in 1995; and her son Roger Hillaby in 1995.
Truly, today is a sad day. But we have a choice. We can be sad and dwell on the negative or we can choose to celebrate a wonderful woman's life. We can choose to think that Pearl is living in the hearts of those she left behind and celebrate those things about Pearl that will live for years to come.
Firstly, Pearl was a VERY organized woman. She prepared her whole life for this moment. She lived her life devoted to God first, her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She made our task here very easy as she left detailed instructions, a detailed life history of herself, even a Purple Shield policy. The few decisions we had to make were easy ones.
In brief, Pearl was born in 1937 and raises at Owsleye, AB, near Elk Point and her brother Lloyd Franklin was born in 1940. When she was 4 years old they moved into town. It was a big year for Pearl when she was 6; her little brother died, she started school, and they adopted adorable Fred Wood. When she was 7 they moved out to a farm then moved again at age 10 to Camrose, AB. and age 11 moved back to the farm. Mom described herself as being a "tom boy" riding horses at her grandparents farm, playing music, Grades 1-5 was school's fastest runner and high-jumper, public speaking in highschool, and as a teenager she read a lot and was quiet but was full of energy and loved being outdoors as a child -(even as an older adult she loved walking and walked around the farm to keep moving). At 11 years of age she started her stamp collecting. She also started a new friendship with a pen-friend twin, Gayle Moore from Indiana, USA which continued throughout her lifetime. At age 13 her Grandfather Spangler passed away and they moved to Lloydminster to a tiny house. At age 16 they purchased the "Gables" home in Lloydminster. She graduated at age 17 and was hired at the Nova Scotia Bank. She met Ralph Hillaby that fall of 1958 at age 20. Pearl quotes "Ralph was easy to fall in love with, He was kind and funny, he was a "Romantic Italian". We loved to be together & talk & hug & kiss!! He was strong and kind. Our song was "You are my Sunshine"". She married Ralph and moved onto the farm at Marwayne. Albert Frank was born in 1959, Carin Donna was born in 1961, Linda Lillian was born in 1963, and 9 years later, 1972 Roger Harry Hugh was born. In 1970 Ralph and Pearl started taking in foster children. Over the years, they cared for more then 45 children. In 1970 they built their new home on the farm. Three years in a row they were hailed out 100% so they rented their farmland out and Ralph started working off the farm and Pearl started a few projects like selling Artex and teaching piano lessons. Pearl's dad Frank Albert Wood passed away in 1980. Her children were growing up and moving away, Linda married Bryan Jensrud and Albert married Sheryl Nickless both in 1982. Roger married Marilyn Veysey in 1992 and Carin married Allen Chiverton in 1993.
Grandchildren started, Kymberly Jensrud in 1986, Olen Hillaby as well as Kirsten Jensrud in 1989 and Mason Hillaby in 1992. In 1998, Carin and Allen adopted two children, Aleah and Justyn. In 1991 her Grandmother Spangler from Kelowna passed away.
In February 1995, Pearl opened her County Rose Cottage Craft store in Marwayne. At the end of the month Ralph and Pearl went on a Mexican cruise, the original Love Boat. It was a very beautiful cruise; they went with her Aunt Marg and Aunt Gladys. Unfortunately Roger, their son, was killed in a car collision in Calgary the day they returned. A few short months later, Ralph her husband was diagnosed with a massive brain tumour and passed away in November. And in 1998 her mother Hazel May Wood passed away. Carin's husband Allen passed away in 2005. Carin married Brent Fitzpatrick in 2007.
It may sound like a lot of tragedy in her life, but she has many highlights too. Linda and Bryan bought a fishing lodge at Green Lake and Pearl loved to fish. We can't count the amount of different boats Dick has purchased for her, each one served a different purpose, one for those little lakes, one for Green Lake, one for BC, one for overnighters...And of course, we have to mention the RV's. At any given time, there was a selection...truck campers, motor homes, 5th wheels, trailers. Pearl and Dick liked to purchase Boats and RV's and fix them up then sell them. At one time they found a sign stapled on their gate post saying Scales Used RV lot. No one owned up to that!
Pearl was very active in her church. She had many friends. Ralph and Pearl held meetings in their home. She attended many meetings faithfully and enjoyed special meetings and conventions near and far.
Recently Pearl was able to enjoy the love of her great grand-children. Keadyn Floberg came along in 2010 and Koryl Floberg was just born this year in June. Pearl's nickname was MEMAW. She had such a tender touch with children. All loved her. She said about every baby "She/He is the CUTEST".
Thanks to Pearl, the family have been given a special gift, one they need to keep working on. That is their ancestry. She spent thousands of hours doing research. It has been a funny bone at times, finding out they are related to famous people, like kings, and princess Diana, and as far back as Jesus. She has compiled two history books, the Spangler and the Hillaby bloodline. A feat most couldn't attempt. She loved to attend family reunions and by far was the most sought after due to her cooking! Pies and Pancakes mostly. One of the most precious things Pearl made for each child/grandchild are the Memory Books which they would like to share with you at the luncheon afterwards.
Pearl loved to be busy. She loved to do crafting; from sewing at a young age to Artex/Trichem to woodwork. Ralph and her took over building Pea Shellers from Ralph's dad. They were up to building 100 Pea Shellers per year. Their shop turned into a production plant. After the Pea Sheller production was cleaned up, out came the pianos. Ralph learned to tune and between them both, they restored 45, 100yr old pianos.
After Ralph passed away, Pearl was blessed with another love, Joseph Scales. They married in 2001. Dick came to the farm and they resided there up until this May when they sold the farm acreage and moved to a home in Manville, AB. Pearl enjoyed meeting all of Dicks family, their reunions and country jamborees every year. They enjoyed playing the dulcimer together.
In 2011, together Pearl, Carin and Linda took a two week Princess Cruise to Hawaii and they stored a lifetime of memories.
We will miss Pearls fudge, and shortbread, and pies. Her famous Cherries In Snow. Her newest "this is the BEST" recipe, or stories of their birds, squirrels and bunnies or people she looked up or found, but most of all her big hugs.
We found in one of the papers Pearl left was a few answers to some questions. One was "What you wanted to accomplish before you died", her answer was "to be a good wife and helpful to my children and grandchildren". Mission accomplished. Another question was "What you wanted to be remembered for". Her answer was: "My love for my Faith in Jesus".

To all of Pearl's children: We are thinking of you all at this time. May you be comforted that she will now be at rest and free of all pain. It was nice to see your mom at Marwayne a few weeks ago and she looked so happy.

Dick,Albert ,Carin,Linda and families It's such a empty feeling to hear of the loss of a great neighbour, friend and baby sitter. Our families were very close and spent many times back and forth helping each other. The fondest memory of this time of year was the many times we spent skating on the slough below the house. It turned out one year to be a community Christmas when Marv sunk the tractor in the slough making our rink . Pearl was the most kindness happy person and always glad to see you. The adjustment of her moving has been hard but the loss of pearl, we will miss her so. We have lots of fond happy memories to hold onto . Love Marv, Deb,Garth, Blaine
