Obituary of Catherine McDow

Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Catherine Louise McDow (nee Pangburn), only 13 days after she lost her soulmate, her husband, Jerry. She passed away in the Lloydminster Hospital, on Sunday, November 29th, with her loving daughter by her side.

Catherine was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Dec 9th, 1940. She grew up in Elderbank, Halifax Co. She moved to Dartmouth in her late teens, where she trained to be a hair dresser. She married Geoffrey Burton in 1959, and had four children. She was a wonderful mother, and ran a perfect household.

Catherine remarried to Gerald McDow in 1978, and they moved to Edmonton, Alberta. In 1991 they moved to Lloydminster, SK. Together, they enjoyed camping, fishing, and over the years, their 3 different dogs.

Catherine is survived by three of her children – Shelley Burton of Edmonton; Kenneth (Cathy) Burton of Hammonds Plains, NS; and David Burton (Tammy) of Lantz, NS. Also, her three stepchildren – Marie (David) McDow of Truro; Douglas (Sheri) McDow of Cole Harbour; and Gerald (Patricia) McDow of Beavebank, NS.

She is also survived her loving sister, Mary (Bill) Foslett, of North Bay, ON, and their children; her in-laws Marjorie McDow and Gerry Murley of Dartmouth; and her sister in-law Lorraine (Jim) Hackett, and their children of Dartmouth.

Cathy and Gerald had great affection for their combined grandchildren – Jared Burton, Ashley Jessome, Julia McRae, Racheal, Emily and Jack Burton; Kayliegh McDonald; Alisha Matthews, Ashleigh and Josalyn Smithers-McDow , and Erica, Drew and Ryan McDow; as well as 6 greatgrandchilren.

She was predeceased by her father William Pangburn, mother Florence Pangburn, her first born and much missed daughter Leslie (Don) Boehner and her amazing husband Gerald McDow.  Married for 42 years, she held down the fort, and worked at Sobeys (and retired) in Lloydminster, while he often worked  out of town. Since his recent retirement, he cared for her completely, learning  that he loved to cook and grocery shop for her with her fragile health. He always made sure she knew she was his first priority. When he passed, she could not accept that he was gone, which caused her health to deteriorate rapidly. Her heart was broken.

Special thanks to her very close friend, Marian Holman; to her GP Dr Gerber, Drs. O and Ali as well as all of the staff on the third floor at the Lloyd Hospital, especially Lorraine. Also a huge thanks to Donald and the staff at McCaw’s Funeral Home. They have been an incredible help with both Gerald and Catherine.

Catherine will be cremated. Due to Covid-19 there will be no service at this time. The family is  planning to take her back to Nova Scotia, as that was her wish.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Lloydminster SPCA.
