Obituary of Helen Finlay

It is with great sadness, we, the family announce Helen’s peaceful passing on January 11, 2021 at the Lloydminster Hospital, Lloydminster, Sask. Mom was a person of great faith, and a member of the Grace United Church in Lloydminster.

 

Mom was born on October 8, 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the daughter of the late Cora and Chester Jessen. She spent her childhood years growing up on the farm in Sanford, Manitoba. Following graduation from high school Mom attended nursing school at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, graduating as a registered nurse in 1957. Mom had a passion for nursing, and she loved her job, a career which spanned twenty-eight years.

 

Mom worked at the Canora Hospital, Canora, Sask, Winnipeg Grace Hospital, Deer Lodge Hospital, Winnipeg, St Rita’s Hospital, Spring Garden Villa, Sydney Nova Scotia. Upon retirement Mom spent many hours doing her second passion…..cooking. She was a wonderful cook and a terrific baker, spending hours in the kitchen baking for family or bake sales. Mom loved to walk and also loved to read.

 

Helen Finlay, former spouse of John Finlay, is survived by: her sons, Ron (Rosemary) Winnipeg, MB, Ray (Mona) Brightsand Lake, SK, Dave (Ramona) Sydney, NS, Allan (Laura) Lloydminster, SK; her grandchildren, Mitch (Maria), Terra (Kyle), Tyler, Rachelle (Scott), Michael (Skye), Patrick (Deidre), Justin (Vanessa), Adam (Samantha), Patrick (Robyn); her great grandchildren, Ethan, Sophia, Quinn, Preston, Ava, Paxton, Blaze, and Navi Lee;  her sister, Bonnie McLaughlin, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and several nephews and nieces.

 

Mom was predeceased by: her brother, Lloyd Jessen; her sister in-law, Betty Jessen; her brother in-law Jim McLaughlin; and best friend Bill Oliver. Thank you to all who cared for Mom and to anyone that shared a pleasant smile with her.

 

In lieu of flowers the family requests to help someone in need or do something nice for someone that will put a smile on their face.

 

A funeral service will be held at the Grace United Church for Mom when the pandemic travel restrictions are lifted.
