Obituary of Robert Cameron
Robert "Bob" Alexander Cameron passed away at Lloydminster Hospital, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, January 31, 2021 at the age of 71 years.
Bob was born November 15, 1949, the only child to Ada and Robert Cameron at Pickle Crow, near Manitouwadge, Ontario. Bob spent his youth in Manitouwadge and attended grades 1 to 12 in Pickle Crow. His father, Robert, was employed with the copper/gold/zinc mining company. After high school, Bob worked briefly for the mine until heading to Thunder Bay to take a broadcasting program at Confederation College. After college graduation Bob headed west, accepting a TV control room position with CKSA TV. He worked in the Lloydminster and area community radio and television station for almost 50 years until his retirement in November 15, 2017
Bob started in a 1970’s TV control room at CKSA TV and saw unprecedented growth and changes in his 50 years in the broadcast industry. Bob was very knowledgeable in CRTC policy, rules and all aspects of program development and scheduling. He always made time for people and was highly respected among colleagues nation wide for his insights and talents. Throughout his career Bob spearheaded the development of local programs that won several CanPro and Gold Ribbon Awards.
Bob enjoyed travelling for work and pleasure. Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, Quebec City, Las Vegas and, of course, Ontario. Bob enjoyed live theatre and stage shows including Cats, Les Miserables and others. Bob had an appreciation and love for fine food, nice restaurants and invites for home cooked meals. In Lloydminster, Bob enjoyed fifty years of restaurant patronage and friendships with professionals involved in the business. The Shell Ranchero, Venice House, 3K Restaurant, Spiros, Mr Bills, Maggie May's, The Sawmill, Three Trees and Cheers/The Proper were some particular favourites.
At home, Bob continued his life long love and pastime as ‘armchair TV critic’. He followed all the program developments and changes, monitored world news constantly, cheered on the Blue Jays and tuned into golf. Most recently he got hooked on Downton Abbey. Bob’s other joy was, of course, reading. His love of reading was instilled early and he recounts fond memories of yearly vacations which allowed him to visit The Hudson Bay and stock up on mystery books. Now you will find Lee Child, David Baldacci and Michael Connelly among his favourite authors. Mystery thrillers were part of many intense reviews and critiques over a Starbucks coffee. Bob was a life long Leonard Cohen fan. He also enjoyed a wide assortment of eclectic musicians and compiled an extensive CD collection.
Bob made friends wherever he went. His sense of humour and quick wit was epic. His laughter was contagious; he was that rare individual folks always remembered. He was always pleased to hear from so many through out his life. Whether through his career, community or personal adventures Bob has left behind a legion of friends with fond memories, sincere smiles and a cache of good times by which to remember him. There were so many friends it is impossible to list everyone. Please, if your life included knowing Bob, add your stories and pictures to the tribute section or email them to McCaw Funeral Service. With your permission the thoughts and pictures will be included in a memory book Bob’s friends will put together. The book will be available at a future Celebration of Life. Rest In Peace, our friend, Robert. You were well loved.
