‘’I was saddened to learn of Wes Saunders passing. He was my 1st boss in broadcasting when I started my career in December 1977. I learned a great deal from him about radio and t-v news, especially the importance of local news that affects the community. I certainly gained the appreciation of a news organization's responsibility to its community. Wes was a good person to work for. He always was supportive and gave you a chance to succeed. I really enjoyed much of my 1st two years at CKSA
He was also very supportive when I took a leave of absence the summer of 1978 when I went to work at the Royal Canadian Air Cadets camp in Penhold, Alberta.’’
Bryan Wyatt News Director CKPR Radio Thunder Bay, ON
-I worked at CKSA between December 1977 and September 1979

Our sincere condolences to the Saunders family. Apart from knowing Wes from his broadcast days, we saw him and family at the LCC where my Mom resides. So sorry that so many months of his last year were gone from you because of Covid precautions. We are all feeling the pain of it. I have donated directly to the Loving Care Centre Auxiliary at the LCC in his memory. RIP Wes.

To all the Saunders family. My Very deepest Condolences go out to you all. I have very fond memories of Wes and have felt very close to him ever since I worked with him at CKSA-TV in the mid 60s. He was a great teacher and had a phenominal tolerance for new staff especially in the department I was in. I always looked forward to any visits I had with Wes and most sorry that Covid has prevented me from visiting him. He was a great man and has left many Warm and Happy memories and I do hope he rests in peace and the family can also cherish great memories of a fine man. You can be most Proud. Don. Weeks

I had the opportunity to work with Wes back in 1975.
He was such a great News Reporter! He was the Voice of Lloydminster and Broadcast Area.
I will always remember sitting next to him in the Newsroom as we would select the slides for the evenings News Stories. Wes always had time to help all of us new to the industry with sage advise and wisdom. RIP Wes, and condolences to your wonderful family.

I was the weather girl when I worked with Wes Saunders in the early '80s at CKSA. He was a wonderful anchor and had a great repartee not only with his audience but with all of us in the studio. He was wise and kind and is fondly remembered. My condolences to his family.

Wes was a rare individual. In an industry renowned for bravado and swagger, Wes remained humble, kind and generous. He was Lloydminster's Cronkite - trusted, sincere and there for the long haul.
I worked with Wes from 1988 to 1992. He was senior anchor and I was news director so every day we'd meet in his office around 4 pm to decide what stories would make up the suppertime TV news. It was the part of the day I enjoyed, a respite from the general craziness of the newsroom. Always cheery, Wes brought enormous insight and perspective to our conversations about news and about life.
The consummate professional, Wes seemed unflappable after decades of live broadcasting on radio and television. However, he was somewhat at a loss for words when a gang from the newsroom - after sipping a few cocktails one weekend - marched with guitars in-hand to the Saunders' home and serenaded Wes with an impromptu Happy Birthday. Vera invited us to stay but Wes wasn't so sure!
It's impossible to adequately present someone in a few short sentences, especially when that person loomed larger-than-life for so many for so long. Let me just say that Wes made our lives better.

I had the honour of working with Wes for 18 short months in the early '90s. I was just out of college and was just a young pup. Wes taught me so much with his constant professionalism and easy going nature. It was a joy to have known him. Condolences to his family

Wes Saunders, Broadcaster, Mentor and neighbour. I first met him in September of 1979 when I joined the TV Station. We didn't have video cameras and gear so I was tasked with shooting slides on film (Lloyd Comp Grad ceremonies, cheque presentations etc), processing the film then mounting them in glass mounts so he had them for the Newscast that day or the next. Later I was in the studio doing camera for interviews with politicians and regular folks from around the region. From swallowing flies or having them land on his face during the Newscast in the fall (the flies loved the warm TV Studio) to many Newscasts we spent hours in contact Wes was always the Professional.
After he retired we were neighbours until a few years ago when he moved. Borrowing yard tools, me scrapping snow off his roof with my new roof rake, we chatted often about the Newscast and the new reporters.
Just before he moved away he would call me monthly when he couldn't get the News on TV. I would go over and find he was using the wrong remote control, changing the tv channel not the cable box….. Reminds me of the night we lost power at the station just before the Newscast. Wes just turned around and put paper in the old manual typewriter and continued writing the cast. The electric one was dead. The fact we had no power to go to air that night with the cast was a minor issue.
RIP Wes.
You were a Great Friend and Mentor to many of us.
My Condolences to his children and their families.

I had the privilege of being interviewed by Wes a few times on TV. He made it so easy to just "talk" with him without thinking of the cameras being on you... and he always had a smile! When you think of Lloydminster, you think of Wes. My condolences to the Saunders family.
