Obituary of Ethel Johnstone
Ethel Elizabeth Johnstone passed away peacefully on April 30, 2021 at Jubilee Home in Lloydminster at the age of 97.
Born July 18, 1923 to Adam and Janet Johnstone, Ethel grew up on the family homestead near MacDowall, Saskatchewan. As the second youngest of nine children, Ethel enjoyed growing up on the family farm and enjoyed playing ball with her older siblings.
Ethel obtained her nursing license and travelled to her first job in Hawaii at a private residence. After her nursing career, she travelled many miles on the CN rail cooking for the maintenance crew. She became very close to the crew members and considered them as part of the family.
Ethel moved to Kamloops in the early 80’s and then to Camrose where she spent many years with Norman Thorpe before moving to Lloydminster. She enjoyed her large garden and canning all of the fresh vegetables, always sharing with friends and family.
Ethel had a great imagination, a great memory and loved telling stories. Well into her 90’s she was able to recall our large family’s birthdays, relationships and fun facts. She was known and loved far and wide for her silly jokes and her unforgettable, contagious laugh.
She will be sadly missed by her granddaughter Jody Lewis (Kent Shockey) of Kamloops and great grandchildren Zachary and Caitlyn Lewis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her laughter and love for family will live on through them.
Ethel was predeceased by her son Stewart Evans in July 2004; her eight siblings: Nettie McDonald, Mary Evans, Jean Sylvester, Ekky MacDonald, Jim Johnstone, Andy Johnstone, Jessie Stewart and Dorothy Storey.
Interment will follow at a later date in MacDowall, Saskatchewan.
Donations in memory of Ethel can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
