Obituary of Wally Moskal

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter (Wally) at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton on Thursday, the 17th of June, 2021 at the age of 72 after a brief struggle with cancer.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Patricia, of 47 years of marriage; daughter, Lisa (John) Hinton and grandchildren, Abby and Jack; Kristopher Moskal and grandchildren, Makayla and Avalyn; brother, Daniel (Ruby) Moskal; sisters, Patricia (Peter) Murray and Theresa (Brian) Milne; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Wally grew up on the farm near Gronlid, SK where his passion for sports, notably hockey and baseball, was matched only by the work ethic he learned as a farm kid. His mother, Mary (Baba), championed the importance of education with all her children, and Wally carried that academic dedication through his life. Wally graduated from Melfort High School and was then accepted to the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan. It was during this vibrant time that Wally and Pat came into each other’s lives, and a bond of love was formed that would last the rest of Wally’s life.

Wally and Pat were married in Saskatoon, Lloydminster was their home and where they raised their family. Wally proudly started his legal career with Gulak Robertson Baynton and he went on to diligently practice Law in Lloydminster for the next 50 years. Wally was also an advocate for many community efforts, including helping to form the Big Brothers of Lloydminster and coaching numerous kids sports teams. Wally’s love of hockey was evident in playing with the Lloydminster Neversweats for many years. Wally’s dedicated work as a lawyer and his volunteerism in the community resulted in an uncounted number of friendships.

Wally also remained close to his farming roots, delighting in seasonal work with his brother Allan and brother-in-law Gerry. Whether it was herding cattle, bailing hay or driving truck, Wally was eager to lend a hand. At home in Lloydminster, Wally kept a large garden, a green lawn and was always on the lookout for the next tree to plant.

Throughout his life, Wally’s truest pride and first priority was his family. Wally encouraged his family to excel in their education and always put forth their best effort in school, sports, dance and numerous other extra-curricular endeavours. Frequent summer trips to the Okanagan to water-ski and play frisbee on the beach or winters in Kimberly to be out on the slopes were his favourite, and regardless of the activity, Wally was always taking care to ensure those around him were enjoying themselves. Over years and decades Wally travelled frequently, over both short and long distances, to visit with family and friends. He felt that those relationships were of the greatest importance and his effort to keep those around him connected with each other reflected his dedication to that which most anchored, motivated and centred his life: his family.

Wally’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the University of Alberta Hospital and Edmonton Emergency Medical Services Paramedics for their exemplary and compassionate care in Wally’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or other meaningful charity of personal choice.

A private memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 24th at Glenwood Funeral Home, Sherwood Park, Alberta. A livestream of the service will be available and can be accessed from Glenwood Funeral Home’s website.
