EULOGY -
Good morning guests. It is my privilege to speak today about Steve Kozinski. Thank you all for coming today.
It all started with a war and a family’s quest for survival. After a few tough years the Kozinski’s arrived in Canada and settled at the family farm northwest of St. Walburg, Saskatchewan. Steve was born at the family farm on June 6, 1950. His proud parents were Witalis and Maria Kozinski.
Steve is survived by: sons, Daniel (Tara) and their children, Zack (Nicole) and Kalin; Rob (Marsha) and their children, Tyler and Avery; Darin (Chantal) and their children, Alyssa, Jaxson and Aliyah; and Randy; brother, Victor (Judy); mother-in-law, Alma ; sisters-in-law, Cheryl, Linda, Laurie (Jerry) and Theresa; brother-in-law, Ken (Corrine); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve was predeceased by: his wife, Marlene; parents, Witalis and Maria; father-in-law, James; brothers, Tony, Joseph, Walter; brother-in-law, Wayne.
Steve began his life as a farmer at a young age due to the death of his father. He married the love of his life Marlene on August 21, 1971. They went on to raise a family of 4 boys on the farm where it is still located today. Steve also worked out of town on oil rigs and later formed a business (along with Marlene). Today the Steamer business is operated by his son Dan. Darin and Chantal are keeping the farming tradition alive.
Steve had many loves ~
1- Family, Marlene was his everything. Even after she was taken from us a few short years ago. He loved her so much. He had a strong love for his children and grandchildren especially Randy. And let’s not forget all his extended family who have either gone before us or are still with us today. Steve put family first.
2- Friends. He had many friends, too many to mention here. Some of you have been long time friends while others for a shorter period of time. Steve enjoyed his times and adventures with all of you. Coffee time at Kim’s became a favorite activity in recent years.
3- Farming, Steve was a farmer 24/7, 365 days a year. He loved being out on the land. If he wasn’t in the field, he would sure be thinking out farm related things. He raised cattle, pigs and chickens. Later it was grain farming that became the main staple. He was often on his phone checking the weather, grain future prices or even phoning others to check how much rain they received. If someone wanted to talk farming then Steve was your guy.
4- Fishing whether on the boat or through the ice, Steve loved to go fishing. His friends, kids and grandchildren were all a part of his fishing adventures. The following lakes will never be the same; Turtle Lake, Steele Narrows (Loon Lake), Peck Lake, Lac Des Isles and Peter Pond/Churchill Lakes up in Buffalo Narrows where our parents bought a cabin.
5- Hunting, whether it was a deer, moose or elk, Steve loved the hunt and then making sausage. Friends and family will have witnessed many successful hunting adventures. He grew up in the bush and would often say that some of the best hunting is right here, close to home.
6- Playing ball. Throughout the years Dad loved playing ball. He was very blessed to have been a part of some great teams with many great teammates. It starts with the Royals (fastball), then onto teams such as The Spindles Singles, Winding Creek and Wakwa (orthodox). A lot of fun weekends were spent on the ball diamonds.
Steve was about core values, he wanted us to work hard and treat others right (be a good citizen). He sure did that didn’t he? Many people have commented on the type of person he was. He was hard working, honest and never afraid to help others out without asking for much in return.
In closing I know Steve would want to mention this. This day is as much about him as it is about his wife of nearly 49 years, Marlene Kozinski. She was his everything. This day is as much about remembering his legacy as it is about remembering hers. You both will be dearly missed!
A quote from a neighbor/ friend recently has come to mind, “I have thought of Steve lots lately. All were happy thoughts of course. Other a bit of admiration. In a weird way thanks to politics and a war the Kozinski family ended up in Canada. This blessed us all with a good bunch of people.” Steve would want us to celebrate both his and Marlene’s life today. Rest in Peace! Until we meet again!
