Obituary of Joseph Stakiw

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Stakiw, of Saskatoon and formerly of Maidstone, died Jan 22, 2012 at Sechelt, B.C. He was born in Esk, Saskatchewan on May 26, 1915 and raised in Foam Lake. After attending university he assumed the role of administrator of the R.M's in Spruce Lake, Medstead, and Maidstone. He was an accountant for many organizations. Maidstone was the centre of Joe's working universe. To him, even as well traveled as he was, there was no better place than Maidstone. He dedicated himself to community involvement. His efforts were recognized as he was the recipient of numerous accolades including the Centennial Medal and the Lieutenant Governor's Award. Joe's personality was one of optimism, warmth and generosity. His "Good Morning" greeting was a ritual independent of the time of day and was always accompanied by a broad smile. Self interest was always secondary to the needs of others but when he had the time he was an avid and talented sportsman, excelling at hunting, hockey and curling. His love for the land, nurtured in gardening, evolved into his proudest possession- a farm. Farm labour brought him peace, joy as well as some financial rewards. Lastly and most importantly, Joe was fortunate in "love". He married his Foam Lake sweetheart, Thelma Anderson in 1938. They had been married for 50 years when Thelma passed in 1988. Their union produced two children, Jolyne and Susan. He and Thelma were devoted, wonderful parents and grandparents. At age 78 he married Dorothy Erickson and they enjoyed happy times together. For many years the focus of "Papa's" life was his grandchildren and lately his great grandchildren. Few are capable of formulating the loving bonds he created with his grandchildren. He dispensed unconditional love, and they reciprocated with heartfelt adoration. He will be greatly missed by his wife Dorothy Erickson; daughters: Jolyne Ball (Howard), and Susan Teplitsky (Paul); grandchildren: Deanna Blacklock (Jonathan), Gina Ball (Jim Saunders), Janel Ball, Liane Teplitsky (Edwin Pankau), Ryan Teplitsky (Christine), Tyson Teplitsky (Jacquelyn); his great-grandchildren: Preston and Paisley Teplitsky and Alexander Teplitsky, Everett Joseph Pankau; Dorothy's family: Elden Erickson (Hilda) and their children Megan, Ashley, Aaron Erickson (Judy): his sisters: Amy Bessey, Lil Martin, and Jeanie Emde and many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends. Memorial service for Joe will be Feb 7th at 2 PM (MST) at the United Church in Maidstone. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Pine Island Suites in Maidstone or charity of your choice.
