Wayne Russell, what a character! He was one of my first full time bosses, after I finished High School. Rans Construction moved to Lloydminster in the late '70's and I was hired to set up the Lloydminster office. They sent me to Saskatoon for training under Phyllis, the Saskatoon Office Admin and Joe Rans, the owner at the time. I learned everything that needed to be done, office wise, and with Wayne at the helm as a new branch manager, we did it.
It was after I left in 1982 that Wayne and a couple others bought out Rans Construction and started Rusway Construction. Wayne was a good guy to work for. I remember on Parade Days he would come to the office and say, "Hop in, we're going to the parade." He was a hard worker, compassionate towards his employees, and had a sense of humour that everyone enjoyed. Even till the end, whenever I saw him he would have a smile and a joke, and ask how I was doing.
Bit of a strange thing happened years later. In October of 2014, I had to go to the hospital to get results of some tests and was placed in a room with just a curtain between beds, and low and behold, on the other side of the curtain was Wayne Russell. Our Doctors both came in at roughly the same time and told us simultaneously that we each had cancer. Ugggh.
It was a struggle for both of us, for sure, but after a two year battle I was declared cancer free. I don't know all the details of Wayne's journey but I know he had different issues right till the end. While working in the hospital I would see him now and then. It didn't matter how sick he was, he always said hi and smiled. I worked with his daughter Tami at the hospital and I asked her, "So your dad is retired now, how is he doing"? And she said, "Oh he's raising cattle now". That for sure was Wayne, a hard worker and not one to sit for long.
Wayne moved to Lloydminster, raised his family here and embraced the community. He always gave back 100%. Rusway Construction supported many things in Lloydminster and helped shape the future of the booming city he was part of.
To Barb, Lana, Tanya, Bartley, Jarrod and Tami, and all of your families, I am so sorry for your loss.
He was one of the good ones...one to give it all he could till the end. He always spoke highly of all of you.
He is pain free now. RIP Wayne

Mary Ann and I offer sincere condolences to the Russell family in the loss of the Oldtimer.
We had so much fun with the “Rusway Family” amidst the work that was abundant in the late 70’s and early 80’s with first Rans Construction and later Rusway Construction. If one could ever ask for a community builder it would be Wayne and the crew that he brought to Lloydminster in the 70’s. His crews installed most of the underground utilities in the southern half of Lloydminster I am sure. They were well on their way when we left Lloydminster in 1988.
Back then at least at the start, it was Joe Rans that secured the deals with the City of Lloydminster in a time when the community was undergoing the first of a few booms. But it was Les Rans and Wayne Russell that delivered the goods initially and as time went forward Wayne’s crew took over the business of installing Lloydminster’s underground utilities pretty much unopposed as I remember. And did they ever move the earth. His crews kept the three engineering technicians (Glenn Tompolski, Pete Hunt and myself) running to keep the earthmovers (Valley C Construction) roughing in the streets for them and to keep the engineering layout ahead of the backhoes. Many times I have reflected upon that time with my good friend Glenn about the miles and miles of piping that went in during our time there. And we have to shake our heads in acknowledgment about the production that was witnessed every day on a Rusway Construction job site. It really was incredible. Sometimes the backfilling and compaction crews would work till dark on some of those long summer days to keep up to the front end trenching and pipelaying operations. If you were around the Oldtimer, you understood he never did things in a small way. The crews he had knew this and they all delivered. I know there were some complaints along the way but Wayne was a very fair person and his employees were always looked after.
We both have never experienced anything like those days, as we moved on with our careers elsewhere.
I remember in the early days when Wayne, Don Bauml and some of the Miasga boys came to town and when they addressed us they used the word “chum”. But it wasn’t long after that Wayne would say “how’s it going oldtimer?” which was a bit odd because most of us were much junior in years – but that was his ice breaker and over time he became the “oldtimer” an affectionate acknowledgement of his personality and “Oldtimer” was the “handle” of a real character.
And there were many social gatherings with this “Rusway” family after hours which we got to share our families and stories with. But not only in summer, the friendship and kindness extended to the off seasons as we were always planning for the blitz that would be the next construction season. I remember one day in February when we sitting around at the coffee shop when Wayne announced that spring must be near because he saw a Robin today. When asked where did he see it, he replied “frozen to the drain pipe!” Love that guy..
To Barb, Lana, Tanya, Bart, Jarrod and all of the Russell family, Mary Ann and I are so glad we came to know you and we are saddened by your loss -- but know that memories of you all and the “Oldtimer” especially are alive and well.. RIP Oldtimer
