Lawrence coached me for years in baseball. We won a lot because Lawrence never made winning the only priority. All these years later I can't remember any particular baseball skill he taught me, but the lessons of focus, kindness, acceptance, responsibility, supporting friends and teammates, and the power of showing rather than just telling -- these never left me It was many years before I realized that he had primarily been showing us how to give back, show up, put others first, be a good man. My parents too, who loved baseball, respected him deeply as both a coach and a role model.
My condolences to Fay, to Rick, to Ella Mae, and all Lawrence's family. May his memory continue to be a blessing.
