Obituary of James Born

James Born passed away at Lloydminster Hospital, Lloydminster, SK on September 20, 2024 at the age of 82 years.

James “Jim” Born arrived on November 23, 1941 in Hafford, SK. The family moved from Speers, SK to Lloydminster in the fall of 1949.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Connie; children, Susan (Gary) Blythe, Sonja (Louis) Harder, Shandra Carlson, Sharmaine (Tim) Merta, and Jim (Brenda) Born; eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Jack and Doris Drysdale; brothers: Pete, Tom, Dennis, Melvin, Ken and Earl; sisters in law, Bev Servold, Chris (Ron Walker) Benson and Nina (John) Bottomley.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, George and Elizabeth Born; brothers, Bill, Abe, John, Jake and Don; sister, Betty Hodgins; in-laws, Ruben and Alice Benson.

Jim left school early and went to work for his brother-in-law, Bob Jack, “only to answer the phone and do the price book” when Bob was starting out. Fourteen years later, after having gone to tech school three times and becoming a sheet metal mechanic and gas pipefitter, he moved on to other endeavors.

Jim was in the oilpatch for a short stint, then to Edmonton for Lennox Industries as a salesman. It didn't take him long to decide that wasn't for him. Back to the oilpatch and in 1977 he bought out Bob Hayes - Wescan Perforators. This company was bought out in 1980, and it was on to the start of the love of his work life - flying.

In 1972 Jim got his private pilot's license and in 1981 pursued a commercial pilot's designation and was able to enjoy his final career for 35 years. In 2016, he was inducted into the Lloydminster Aviation Hall of Fame as one of three recipients.

Jim played hockey for many years as a young person and then in various senior leagues. In 1965, he caught the golf bug and went through many sets of clubs and golf courses near and far. His business card read, “If I'm not flying, I'll be golfing.”
