Al was the kind of person that made you feel that time spent with him was never enough. When I first heard of his passing, I looked through photos to find that light of his, that glint in the eye that presaged a quip or a joke followed by a laugh and a smile. His delight in teasing was an endearing love, a way of sharing joy in quick moments. Being on the receiving end of that attention was the warmest of blankets, and I’ll hold those memories close.
A few years ago, I heard about gravitational waves from two merging neutron stars that had recently passed through Earth. It took 130 million years for those waves to reach us, and for just an instant, everything on Earth bent ever so slightly as they passed. Every person, leaf, mountain, and molecule. I like to think of Al as having that same effect on those who knew him—Susan, Jodie, Jim, and all his family and friends. He was a ripple in our universe: unassuming, welcome, but most of all, deeply felt and lasting. Thank you, Al.

It’s the thing that you know is going to happen your whole life. But the thing that you’re never prepared for. Or more accurately … can never be prepared for.
In December, I lost my father.
The man that might be single-handedly responsible for my music obsession.
The man who had the first record collection I ever flipped through.
The man whose 8 track collection became the main source of my youthful summer anthems.
This was the man who brought me into this world and the man who I silently learned from over the 45 years I was fortunate enough to be loved by him.
A man who saw my curiosity for layout and graphic design even as a preteen and let me help him make advertising layouts and paste-ups for his most trusted clients and industry allies.
So much of my life is also his. And I get to carry those parts of him with me.
His playful spirit and endless appetite for mischief have been passed on through us too.
I will never have enough language or a grasp on words eloquent enough to convey the exquisite moments of joy and the affectionate antics that were his ultimate treasures.
So. Here we are.
Without his words.
Without his music.
Without his voice.
Without his presence.
Without his laughter.
Without his pranks.
If you knew him. I hope you remember him well.
If you were on the receiving end of one of his outbursts of mischief. Know that you were loved.
If you didn’t or you weren’t. Find one of us and ask us to share our favourite memories.
It will be our joy today and every day to share his life with you and to let you know about this great man.

The Long Goodbye
I woke up early thinking. A tear formed and dropped onto my pillow. Followed by many more.
Tears of memories past.
I pulled myself from bed and completed my morning rituals. This is often when I think of loved ones who have passed in my life. For everyone, those people are different. But for me my list is short. Grandpa. Dustin. Dad. Mom. Father in law. Mother in law. Christine. Angie. And now, of course, Allan who brought it all to mind.
These people had the power to make our time with them stand out.
Many time we cry after thinking of them. But with more time a smile crosses our faces right out of the blue when the right memory hits us.
We all have different coping skills and ways of dealing with loss.
Sometimes I find myself sitting down to breakfast with a thought of them lingering close to the surface.
Somehow. I mask my way through it. No one the wiser. But I always carry that grief and loss somewhere inside.
This is The Long Goodbye.

Thank you Susan for sharing the obituary with us.
We have only known you for such a short time but enjoyed every visit with you both !
The genuine love of life Allan had will not be forgotten.
From the first day you two came in to install the floor covering at the museum I knew how truly gifted we all were to have you in our community.
Big hugs to you and your family.
