I got to know Ernie in the early 1970's when we both worked for Fleming Construction. We worked together in quite a few different areas brushing and building roads. One summer, I remember, we were building farm access roads in the Rabbit Lake area. We stayed at the Rabbit Lake hotel. Henry, the boss, was usually there, but that time he was away, probably picking up repairs, although I can't recall why for sure now. We had finished for the day and were back at the hotel washing up before we went for supper when someone yelled up from downstairs. "Cat's on fire!" The whole crew went running downstairs and piled into the nearest truck and we took off back for the job site. I was in the truck box in the back with a couple of other guys. Ernie was driving. Apparently a farmer, who lived near where the equipment was parked had seen smoke coming from one of the cats and had phoned the hotel. Ernie was normally a careful driver, but that time he had the gas pedal to the floor and the old truck was practically flying from knoll to knoll going down that narrow country road. I remember thinking, I hope no one's coming from the other direction. When we got to where the cats were the farmer had already put the fire out. There was nothing for us to do but check the cat for damage. Ernie climbed up on the cat tracks and knelt down to look into the stump pan where the fire had been. I looked at his feet and all he had on were his socks. He hadn't bothered to stop to put his boots on! Ernie had worked at that kind of job for many years when I knew him, and he worked in the same field for years after I left. I worked at it only long enough to know how tough those jobs could be. The long work days, often thirteen or fourteen hours before getting back to camp at night. The six o'clock mornings in forty below weather in winter. The heat and the dust in the summer. The injuries, the danger and frustration of working through breakdowns and mud to get the job done. Only Ernie would know all the mornings he woke up bone tired and got up and went to work anyway. Month after month, year after year he gave it his best. And all for no more reward than a paycheck at the end of the month. A check that meant his bills were paid and his family had a decent life. Ernie was a working man, and for that he deserves our respect and our thanks.

Our sincere condolences to Ludy and family. I always enjoyed having a visit with Ernie when we met. I always remember the winter of 1955, Ernie was driving a cat for an oil company and when he went by our place he saw that the road was totally blocked. So he turned in and drove through it and without realizing it he drove over two rows of tame trees we had planted without realizing it. I didn't make that known to him until years later, but I am happy to report that the trees all survived and have made a beautiful windbreak. Sincerely, Joyce and Bob

Ludy and families: Words alone cannot express our sympathy on the sudden passing of your husband, father, and grandfather. It was great that I was able to stop by a couple of weeks ago and have coffee with you. Gary and I always enjoyed our visits. No doubt the outpouring of sympathy you have received since his parting has been of some consolation. Hopefully it serves as a reminder of how well-loved and liked he was. We hope that you and your family will find peace and comfort in knowing that others are thinking of you at this time. May God bless your wonderful families - yours in Faith ... Sherlane, Gary, Logan, Tanner Phillips and also words of comfort from Adele, Dave, Corben, Claire and Isaac (Johnson/Hickson family)
