Svend "Slim" Andersen was born on March 31, 1917 at Hejnsvig, Denmark. In June 1927 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Redcliff, Alberta. There were several Danish families there. After School graduation he went to Old College and took a two year Agriculture Course. While there he worked on the College farm and he continued to work there after graduation. When the College dairy cows were moved to Brooks he went with them. Next the cows were moved to Vermilion College, by train with Slim in charge. In was in Vermilion where he met Effie. Slim stayed in Vermilion until he volunteered to join the Army in 1942. Slim & Effie were married in Red Deer on March 16, 1943 before he went overseas. In 1943 he was sent to England then on to serve in the Central Mediterranean Area and Northwest Europe. After discharge in 1946, he managed a dairy at Lethbridge. The spring of 1947 he was in Edmonton delivering bulls by train to farmers through the Government Bull loaning program.
In September of 1947 through Veterans Land Act he bought a half section of land and this has been home. The cattle and horses were the part of farming he liked best. It was great that combines were made as he sure didn't like stooking. With hard work and perseverance the farm has expanded over the years. The hardest part was when he could no longer be active farming because of his health. The farm has continued with his sons Ed & Neil. He didn't always agree with what they did or how they did it and I'm sure they know that. Now grandsons are involved and he thought that was great.
Slim & Effie have a family of four sons and a daughter. He was proud of their accomplishments. The ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren were a joy and he was always interested in what they were doing. The great grandkids were special and so interesting. Family meant so much to him.
Slim enjoyed country living and the community friendships. He supported many community events and activities. The Legion was his main interest. He was a Life Member. He liked to know what was taking place even though he couldn't participate because of his health.
Family came first with Slim. He would always be there for them. He will always be loved and missed by many.
