Please share a memory of Frieda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
OBITUARY FOR FRIEDA EMMA NEWMAN: Frieda Emma Newman was born May 4, 1909 in Tilsit, East Prussia to Karl and Maria Adomeit, the second eldest of 4 children. The family moved to Bremen before 1913 where she attended school. There she developed a lifelong interest in handwork and sports, especially swimming. By age 15 she was working as a mother’s helper in a large house in Bremen and had plans to train as a nanny on board ships but the family made the decision to emigrate to Canada. They came to the Rex district in 1927 and she immediately went to work as a mother’s help again, this time with the Bright family. Her family moved to the Hillmond area and farmed for a while, then moved on to Edmonton. She continued her career there as a nanny until her marriage to Bill Newman in 1938 in Edmonton. They moved back to the Hillmond area and farmed there until 1970. It was on this farm that their 3 sons were born and raised. She joined the Hillmond Ladies Club and the Hillmond Goodwill Group and enjoyed the fellowship and work they did. She loved to sing and would start or join in a singsong on any occasion. She had a great love for children and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy. She and Bill moved to Lloydminster in 1970 and she continued with the Hillmond groups but also joined the Lloydminster Senior Society and the Whittier Eggen circle at Grace United Church. She helped Bill with his interest in the Rock and Gem Club and enjoyed the traveling and visiting they did with that group. They also traveled every year to visit family and made 2 large trips – one to England and Germany (also to visit family) and one to Hawaii. She moved into Hallshome Apartments in 1995 after the death of her husband. She eventually moved to Pioneer Lodge and then after breaking her hip she moved into the Dr. Cooke Nursing Home where she remained until her passing on October 25, 2007. Frieda was predeceased by her parents, her brother Otto in Germany, her brother George in Smithers, B.C., her sister Johanna in Edmonton, her husband of 56 years, Bill, and her daughter-in-law Patsy in Moose Jaw. She is survived by her sons: Bill (Aileen) of Barriere, B.C.and children Shane (Tanya) of Angus, Ont. and Heather of Vancouver; Michael (Janet) of Lloydminster and children Matthew (Pam) of Lloydminster, Laura (Neil) Thibault of Lloydminster , and Jesse (Jenni) of Cayley, Ab.; Russel (Ethel) of Red Deer, Ab. and children Kirk (Michelle) of Calgary, Ab., Daryl (Shelley) of Red Deer, Ab., Kari (Jason) Lewans of Saskatoon, Sk. and Jodi (Allan) Chung of Edmonton, Ab. and 7 great grandchildren: Samantha, Rebecca, Lauren, Aryn, Alexis, Clark, and Brianna.
