Howie, Joan, and Family Thanks for phoning me about your Mother. She was a great person. So kind, always ready to have a laugh, such a great person. Although we haven't visited in some time, I have fond memories of our trips together with our husbands. We were able to keep in touch over the phone for many years, something I'll miss greatly. My thoughts are with you all at this time. Sincerely, Dorothy Banks

I will be forever grateful for the gift you gave to my grandpa. His heart was yours and I grew up admiring the relationship you two had. You both always welcomed me with love into your home. For some reason you always seemed to have a special fondness for me, and I really appreciated and treasured that. I will always remember my trip to saskatchewan to visit you, after grandpa had passed away. You had your own place and were happy to be closer to your Howie. Time passes by and with the distance we didn't see each other again.
May you rest in peace. May you and your family know of the gratitude I have in my heart for knowing you.

After my Mother passed away, my Father (Jim Routledge) was very sad. On a trip to Unity to visit Bill (his brother) and Ruth dad met up with an old friend from years gone by (Gerti). Soon Dad was going to Unity every week to vist and he fell in love with and married Gerti. Gerti and Dad made some wonderful trips to places like Cuba, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charloltte Islands), Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Vancouver and Geri's favorite a trip to the Holy land. Geri was a blessing for my Dad
Gerti was like a mother to me and I will miss her very much. Gerti rest in peace

I have missed you Gertie since my grandpa passed away and wish you the most wonderful place in heaven where I know you will serve a higher place in the ranks. Your kind heart and loving spirit always warmed my heart and made my heart smile. You were like a second grandma to me. I love you. Xo

In the summer of 1966 Gert & John visited their friends in rural Manitoba and got talking about the fact that this country girl down the block would be moving within the month to Port Arthur for 3 years of nurses training.
Port Arthur was a long way from home for me & the very first week I was there, the Smiths' took me under their wings. Every Friday evening I packed my bag & headed over to Fort William. Most often Gert & John would pick me up, occassionally I would take the bus over and meet Gert at Woolworths where she worked at the jewelery counter. On Saturdays, we visited, toured around town and one year, with Gert's encouragement and support I even managed to sew my one and only 'camel hair' suit. Oh my, Gert was so patient! So many laughs, lots of fun. My home away from home. I still can close my eyes and remember Gerts warm & cheerful laugh & the quiet smile & twinkle in John's eye.
My classmates & friends were always welcome and were often invited for Sunday dinner- where John would "hide" the heel of the roast beef hoping to find it before I did & Gert would always be sure that one of my favorite desserts- either her Crumb or Rhubarb cake were on the menu. After dinner we would be safely delivered back to residence more often than not with a goodie bag full of treats to get us through another week of grueling classes. I am sure I would never have made it through without my second " Mom & Dad".
Although miles have interveined over the years Gert & I stayed in touch - catching up on family , friends and life in general.
I'll miss you Gert- a genrous, loving and kind soul whose impact on my life has been profound.
My Heartfelt Sympathy to you, Howie & Joan
and to your family

I spent time with Auntie Gertie twice, once with my dad in 1969 on a business trip and then with my brother Tim, I think in 1970, on a trip to a swim meet. I remember both visits as if they were yesterday. She was always happy to see us and, quite frankly, spoiled me rotten on the first visit. Every time I eat a bacon sandwich with extra ketchup ( something I will do soon, in tribute ) I think of her and that summer. All my love to Howard and his family.

Aunty Gertie held a very special place in my heart. To a young girl, Auntie Gertie was the finest example of elegance and poise - such a gentle and caring woman. Uncle John (my dad's brother) came to our wedding in 1985, and that was the last time we saw him. We saw Aunty Gertie few times since then due to distance, and I will always remember her laugh and her kind smile. I never met her second husband, but did speak with Aunty Gertie on the phone a few times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you - Howie & Joan - and your family at this difficult time.

Howie and family - I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She was one of the nicest ladies I have known. Lady is a great compliment to this wonderful woman and a very gracious one, too. I thought about her a lot this winter, but since we were away I could not make contact. She was a Rebekah sister also & a very good & special one. Out thoughts are with you & yours & may the many, many good memories keep her ever close.
