Obituary of Harvey Frizzell
Harvey John Frizzell passed away peacefully at the age of 87 years on Sunday, November 10, 2024 in Lloydminster Hospital.
Dad was born on a Saskatchewan farmstead near Strasbourg to Howard and Janet Frizzell in 1937. He graduated from the Strasbourg High School in 1955. After working on the farm, he left to attend Regina College in Education for one year and then went to University of Saskatchewan where he completed his Bachelor of Education in 1960.
While in Saskatoon, during his studies, Dad met Shirley and they enjoyed many evenings on the backyard swing and long walks. This was the beginning of a special friendship and by 1958, they were going steady. To put himself through school, Dad worked 12-hour days during the summers for Department of Agriculture at $1.05 per hour. After purchasing a 1959 Chevrolet, Dad proposed marriage at the local drive-in in Saskatoon. In 1960, amongst blue lighted Christmas trees, Mom and Dad were married in front of 60 guests.
Dad's first teaching position began in September 1960 at Battleford Central School. His salary was $4200 per year teaching math and record keeping to Grades 9-12 in a basement classroom. After spending three years in Battleford, they moved to Lloydminster in 1963 with daughter, Sandra and son, Terry in search of a larger community to raise their family. Another son, Bob, joined the family a few years later. Dad continued his illustrious teaching career which spanned decades as he cultivated a desire of learning in his students.
Dad mostly taught trigonometry, calculus, algebra and physics at Neville Goss and Lloydminster Comprehensive High Schools. Dad was committed in teaching his students and coaching various school sports. At LCHS he was affectionately known as "Mr. Physics".
Dad wasn't one to sit around and enjoy relaxing as his mind was always in motion. He enjoyed painting in the summers, camping in a tent trailer with his family, carpentry, gardening, fishing and puttering around the house or yard. After leveling the garden every fall on Alberta Crescent, Dad would often create a makeshift ice rink where us kids would skate and play hockey when we weren't at Archie Miller or Civic Centre. Dad coached Terry and Bob's hockey or baseball teams and instilled a love of sports within each of us. He also shared his love of the outdoors; it wasn't unusual for us to roast hot dogs in the backyard no matter what season it was.
Harvey is survived by: Shirley, his wife of nearly 64 years; his children, Sandra, Terry (Melanie) and Bob (Brenda); grandchildren, Ryan (Rochelle), Darcy, Tyler, Alex, Jade, Justin and Riley; great grandchildren, Taylor, Dakota and Jayke, as well as numerous family members.
As per Dad's request, no service was held. Memorial donations may be made to donor's charity of choice.
